Wes Craven’s CURSED (2005) Movie Review | One of the Better Werewolf Films

A fun, typical early 2000s movie that, like many monster movies of that era, featured teenagers dealing with all manner of monsters as a way to symbolize their coming of age.

CURSED (2005) does this amazingly.

Firstly, we have Christina Ricci (The Addams Family), Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), Mya, and Joshua Jackson (The Affair) – an all-star cast of actors who have been in numerous cult classic films since the early 2000s.

Now, a big thing for me besides being surprised at all the stars in the cast was how they did the werewolf.

This isn’t gonna be a rating of the monster as they’re no true ‘killer’ in the movie like there would be in a typical horror (this is a horror comedy after all), but the monster itself—the werewolf was done BRILLIANTLY.

They followed all tropes of werewolves (no silver, moonlight, horrible transformations, a cut or bite by a werewolf turns you in to a werewolf), the whole shebang. But the way they looked—

That was the true selling point to me on the movie.

I love a good werewolf (standing upright!) and they did that perfectly.

See what I mean?

Now that that’s out the way, the story itself was simple. Ellie (Christina Ricci) and her brother (Jesse Eisenberg) get into a car accident and encounter a werewolf who then injures them. After a series of strange occurrences for the siblings (aversion to silver, fascination with the moon, proclivity for raw red meat), they realize they came into contact with a werewolf. Finding out who the werewolf is, however, was the fun part.

It was told in typical Wes Craven fashion. Great monsters, funny moments, and scares (if watched while younger) to keep you up at night.

All in all, this was a movie I immediately placed as part of my top werewolf movies, and I can definitely understand why it would have garnered a cult following.
